Raphael, what are Globo's main highlights for MIPTV?Globo has been taking important steps recently and our Cannes catalog illustrates our new phase. It includes telenovelas, super series, series, miniseries and films from a variety of genres, addressing current issues and spanning across multiple platforms and different types of linear and non-linear programming. Our substantial investments in short format production have generated enticing works that have turned heads both Brazil and around the world. We opened Casa dos Roteiristas (House of Screenwriters, in a loose translation) – a collaborative space designed to create short-format productions –, launched new authors and presented successful productions in film and entertainment festivals throughout the world, such as Berlinale. Along these same lines, we are going to launch three series at MIPTV: ‘Thirteen Days Away From the Sun’, a co-production between Globo and O2 Filmes, which is a nail-biting thriller full of action, drama and suspense about a building that collapses and leaves a group of people trapped in the debris; ‘The Seamstress’, a feminine and intimate epic about the exciting and emotional story of two sisters with opposing fates, amidst a period of political and social transformations in the Brazilian backcountry, co-produced between Globo and Conspiração Filmes; and ‘Forbidden City’, a Noir-style series featuring the adventures and mishaps of a private eye who gets caught up in secrets, lies and betrayals in the lavishing Rio de Janeiro of the 1950s. These releases will join other highlights for MIPTV 2018 such as the acclaimed series ‘Under Pressure’ and ‘Jailers’; telenovelas ‘Edge of Desire’, written by award-winner Gloria Perez, which will definitely be a blockbuster, and ‘The Big Catch’, a crime-based romantic comedy that addresses issues such as ethical values and morals with a lighthearted approach.
What are your goals for this market? Have you closed many deals for your latest titles before the market? The goal is to demonstrate the results of Globo’s investments I mentioned earlier by showcasing our catalog to the European market. The range of products we are taking to Cannes showcases our efforts to bring together quality, diversity and innovation in each of our productions. We are increasingly recognized worldwide for producing universal, multi-genre and multi-platform content. The deals we’ve closed recently confirm this trend. We licensed the series ‘Merciless’ to the RTL CRIME cable channel for male audiences, belonging to one of the largest media groups in Europe. The series will be shown in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. We also licensed the award-winning ‘Under Pressure’ to the Middle Eastern MBC Group. And our big hit ‘Edge of Desire’ that captivated audiences in Portugal on SIC, successfully premiered on Ecuavisa (Ecuador) and is scheduled to air April 9 on Teledoce, Globo’s long-standing partner in Uruguay.

Forbidden city
In late February you had several of your telenovelas debuting in Latin America. What were the ratings results and which series performed the strongest? What are your best-selling titles internationally?I think it’s too early to talk about a best seller, but I strongly believe in the potential of the telenovela ‘Edge of Desire’ and its extremely captivating plot written by Gloria Perez, which promises to be our Big Hit. While the telenovela was very successful in Brazil, with an average daily reach of 48 million viewers, it also performed well in Portugal and had a strong debut in Ecuador. ‘Under Pressure’ is pushing forward among the series, licensed to the Middle East and receiving four FIPA D’OR awards early this year for best series, screenplay, actor and actress. The series recorded a daily average reach of 40 million viewers in Brazil. These are outstanding numbers for the time slot where it aired. We are very excited about our latest content. They are moving stories that address issues relevant to target audiences in Brazil, Europe, and throughout the world.

The Seamstress
You are building new studios near Curiçica. Will you increase the output of telenovelas in 2018?Yes, the construction of three new studios exclusively for drama production will allow us to increase volume. However, the gains will be much broader. The studios will bring a fresh concept of production with fixed stages, production modules, and integrated sets, which will ultimately boost productivity, efficiency, and logistics. We will also gain quality and be able to concentrate even more energy on developing ideas and creating good stories, with relevant, moving and current themes that make the difference for each of our viewers. At the end of the day, providing an incredible fiction experience is all that really matters. And Globo has been doing just that, taking this experience to another level.
